Portable generator maintenance and storage checklist
Build a model-specific readiness routine for inspection, exercise, oil, air filters, fuel, batteries, storage, and pre-outage testing.

Start with the exact manual and serial range
Maintenance schedules vary by model, engine, fuel system, climate, and operating conditions. Find the manual for the exact model and, when the manufacturer distinguishes revisions, the correct serial-number range. Save a local copy before storm season and keep the paper quick-start and safety instructions with the equipment.
Create a one-page log for operating hours, date, oil type, oil changes, air-filter service, spark-plug work, battery charging, fuel added or removed, stabilizer treatment, and any starting problem. A receipt or guess is not a maintenance record.
Inspect before every planned use
With the generator cool and off, look for damaged cords, loose hardware, debris, corrosion, oil or fuel leaks, deteriorated fuel lines, blocked cooling or exhaust areas, and evidence of pests. Check oil, air filter, battery, fuel, and controls exactly as the manual directs.
Confirm that the generator can be moved to its safe outdoor operating location and that rated cords, inlet cable, covers approved for operation, fuel containers, and carbon-monoxide alarms are available. Do not wait for an outage to discover a flat starter battery or missing adapter.
Exercise it under the manufacturer’s procedure
Some manufacturers recommend periodic exercise so the engine, fuel system, starting battery, and electrical section do not sit indefinitely. The correct frequency, duration, and whether to apply an electrical load are model-specific. Follow the manual rather than copying a universal monthly schedule.
Run every fuel-burning generator outdoors in its normal safe location during exercise. Record whether it starts easily, produces stable output, carries a planned test load, leaks, smokes, vibrates abnormally, or displays a warning. Stop and diagnose a problem before the unit becomes emergency-critical.
Treat gasoline storage as its own system
Gasoline can deteriorate and create starting or carburetor problems. Honda and Generac both direct owners to follow model-specific storage procedures; those procedures may involve fresh treated fuel, closing a vent or fuel valve, draining the carburetor, running the system dry, or fully draining fuel for longer storage.
A stabilizer cannot restore stale fuel. Use approved containers, label treatment dates, observe local storage limits, keep fuel outside living areas and away from ignition sources, and rotate it according to the product and fuel-treatment instructions. Shut the generator down and let it cool before refueling.
Prepare for storage and return to service
Before storage, let the unit cool, clean it without forcing water into electrical or fuel components, follow the manual’s fuel procedure, protect openings from debris and pests, and store the generator upright in a dry, ventilated place away from ignition sources. Battery-equipped models may require charging or disconnection steps.
When returning to service, reverse the manual’s storage procedure, inspect again, use the specified oil and fresh approved fuel, and perform a test run before relying on the generator. Replace time-sensitive supplies and update the maintenance log with the new readiness date.
