These methods solve different problems

Extension cords carry generator power directly to individual appliances. This can be practical for a refrigerator, freezer, lamp, router, or another reachable load. The appliance is disconnected from the house receptacle and plugged into a properly rated cord connected to the generator.

A transfer switch or a listed interlock arrangement controls how selected household circuits receive generator power while preventing the generator and utility supply from being connected at the same time. It can support hardwired loads such as a furnace blower or well pump when designed and installed correctly.

Never improvise a connection to household wiring

Plugging a generator into a wall or dryer receptacle can energize wiring in unintended directions. This backfeed can expose utility workers, neighbors, and occupants to dangerous voltage while also bypassing normal connection safeguards.

OSHA states that a generator should not be attached directly to a structure’s electrical system unless a qualified electrician has properly installed it with a transfer switch. Local requirements, equipment listings, neutral and grounding design, inlet rating, breaker compatibility, and generator configuration all matter.

Extension cords require real load planning

Use grounded, intact, heavy-duty cords rated for outdoor use and for at least the current and wattage of the connected appliance. Long or undersized cords create voltage drop and heat. Keep connections dry, protected from traffic and sharp edges, and out of doors and windows that would compromise safe generator placement.

Do not connect more load than the generator outlet, cord, splitter, or generator can carry. A high generator wattage does not increase the rating of a 15- or 20-amp receptacle or an undersized cord.

Transfer equipment improves circuit control

Approved transfer equipment lets a user select planned circuits from a familiar panel and can eliminate a web of cords through the home. Its most important function is electrical isolation: the alternate supply cannot energize the utility connection at the same time.

The equipment must be matched to the service and generator connection. A qualified electrician can determine whether a manual transfer switch, listed interlock system, inlet, neutral-switching arrangement, grounding method, or load-management device is appropriate and permitted locally.

The connection method does not change CO rules

A transfer switch does not make indoor or garage operation safe. The CPSC says portable generators should operate outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the home, with exhaust directed away from the home and other buildings. Open doors and windows do not provide enough protection.

Plan generator placement, cord or inlet reach, weather protection that preserves ventilation, refueling access, and carbon-monoxide alarms before an outage. Installation convenience must never move the engine closer to an occupied structure.
